Super Cool Things to Do in Chicago

There's a lot to love in Chicago, the unique food, the bountiful drinks, the endless stream of events. Chicago is also great to walk along the Lakefront Trail, the new Riverwalk, or even the sophisticated Pedway system underground. In Chicago, there are nearly endless options for a night out with dozens of neighborhoods packed with bars, restaurants, galleries, theaters, concert venues and more. But there are a number of extravagant, offbeat, although unusual options to discover for those times when a normal night out just won't do it. Some of them are popular in Chicago, and some are local.

What are the cool things you can do in Chicago:

Chicago Live Comedy Shows:  Chicago is known for its satire worldwide. Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Tim Meadows, and Aidy Bryant are among the seemingly endless collection of celebrities that started performing at the many theaters in the area. The Second City is the most popular comedy club in Chicago, but the smaller clubs are equally entertaining, if not more, and much cheaper as well.

River and Lake Cruises:  You can sit back on Lake Michigan and along the Chicago River and give the attention it deserves to the cityscape of Chicago. From gentle lake tours to exciting speedboat rides, there is a selection of cruises. The Classic Lake Tour is a 40-minute sightseeing trip which allows you plenty of room to soak up the sights, and with fascinating tidbits, commentary recorded.

Riverwalk:  A pedestrian walkway stretches just over a mile along the most central part of the Chicago River running right through the city center. It's a lovely place to walk around and also offers restaurants and bars on the waterfront, kayak rentals and areas to just sit back, relax and watch the boats drift by.

Lincoln Park Zoo:  Of starters, the polar bear and African penguin enclosures have just been restored, while the Regenstein Macaque Forest is a recent arrival in 2014, where you can see Japanese macaques swimming in a hot spring as they do in the wild. This zoo deserves extra credit in 37 acres and dates back to 1868 as one of the last remaining free admission animal parks in the United States. More than 1,100 species are found here in ecosystems that are continuously being rehabilitated.

Symphony Centre:  The Chicago Symphony Orchestra is one of the most prestigious classical ensembles on the planet as one of America's "Big Five." You can see them at the Symphony Center, a landmark on South Michigan Avenue. You will read the names "Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Wagner" on the frieze above the arched windows of the façade. For eight years, Riccardo Muti was the conductor.
